Tip Calculator — Work Out the Tip and Split the Bill

Enter a bill amount and a tip percentage to get three figures: the tip, the total to pay, and the amount owed per person. The percentage is applied to the amount you enter, so to tip on the pre-tax subtotal rather than the final bill, enter the subtotal.

Rounding applies to the total, not the tip. Rounding up raises the total to the next whole unit and works backwards to the tip, so bill plus tip always equals what you hand over rather than landing a few cents off.

The tip is bill × (percentage ÷ 100), the total is bill + tip, and the per-person amount is total ÷ people. A 64.50 bill at 18% gives a tip of 11.61, a total of 76.11, and 19.03 each split four ways.

With rounding on, the total is rounded first and the tip becomes rounded total − bill. Rounding 76.11 up to 77 makes the tip 12.50, an effective rate of 19.4%. Amounts use the currency's own precision: two decimals for the dollar and euro, none for the yen.

Tipping norms are set by country, not by arithmetic. In the United States 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service, and many restaurants add an automatic gratuity of 18–20% for parties of six or more. Canada is similar at 15–20%.

Across much of Europe a service charge is often already included, and rounding up or adding 5–10% is typical rather than expected. Tipping is not customary in Japan or South Korea. Check the bill for a “service included” line before adding anything, because any tip on top is discretionary.

Dividing the total equally is what this calculator does, and it is the right choice when everyone ordered similar things. When one order was much larger, split by item instead: apply the same tip percentage to each person's subtotal and the individual totals still sum to the group total. Splitting food by item while splitting the tip equally is a common compromise, since service goes to the table.
